College Profile
Maulana Azad Memorial Post Graduate College, a prestigious educational institution, celebrated its 70th anniversary in September 2024, marking a remarkable journey of growth, transformation, and dedication to academic excellence. The college traces its origins back to April 23, 1907, when it was established as Prince of Wales College. After India’s independence, it was renamed Govt. Gandhi Memorial College on June 4, 1948, before being bifurcated into Arts and Science streams in 1954 to accommodate the increasing student population. On September 23, 1960, the Arts College was renamed as Govt. Maulana Azad Memorial College in honor of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the first Education Minister of India. Over the years, the college expanded its offerings, introducing postgraduate courses in Mathematics (2003), BCA (2009), BBA (2010), and Music (2017), becoming a multi-faceted institution with a wide range of disciplines across both the arts and sciences.
The college, which was affiliated with the University of Jammu until 2016, is now a constituent college of the Cluster University of Jammu. It has adopted the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in its entirety since 2022. To support the educational needs of migrant students, a Camp/Evening shift was introduced in 1990, which continued until 2011. The college's architecture blends traditional and modern styles, with a striking facade featuring a central dome flanked by symmetrical wings that evoke Gothic influences. The campus is home to various academic blocks, including a Science Block, Earth Science Block, and the New Block, which houses the Mathematics, BCA, BBA, and Music departments. The college also boasts modern facilities such as well-equipped laboratories, classrooms, and a library with over 60,000 books, along with internet facilities, a Xerox copier, and access to numerous magazines, newspapers, and journals.
In addition to academic infrastructure, the college provides comprehensive student services. A Boys’ Hostel and Girls’ Hostel, a canteen complex, and a sports complex offer essential amenities, while a newly established Common Room for Girls adds further convenience for female students. The Administrative Block, which houses the Principal’s office, IQAC, and a conference hall, adds to the grandeur of the institution. The college also fosters social responsibility and leadership through its NCC and NSS programs, which instill discipline, a sense of camaraderie, and community service. Additionally, the college’s Indian Red Cross Unit plays an active role in disaster relief and national service. With over 1,200 students enrolled in various courses through its IGNOU Study Centre, the college extends its educational reach beyond traditional classrooms, offering distance education in subjects such as Bachelor Preparatory Programmes, B.A., B.Com., B.Sc., and various certification programs.
The college’s picturesque location enhances the learning experience, with the Tawi River flowing opposite the campus and the majestic Bahu Fort set against the backdrop of the Trikuta Hills. This scenic beauty, combined with the college’s academic rigor, makes Maulana Azad Memorial Post Graduate College a revered institution, dedicated to shaping the minds and futures of its students while preserving its rich heritage.
