Symposium on Aryabhata from Zero to Zenith
A symposium on Aryabhata from Zero to Zenith under the aegis of “ Azadi Ka Amrit Mahaotsav” , was organized on November 25, 2022 by the Department of Mathematics Maulana Azad Memorial College, Jammu. Under the Patronage of Dr. Surinder Kumar, Principal of the college. Dr. Surinder Kumar, Principal of the college, appreciated the initiatives taken by the Department of Mathematics in organizing seminars and Symposia on mathematics. He observed that such interactions of students with teachers and board are crucial to understand the deeper sense of the subject. Dr. Shally Gupta . HoD appreciated the efforts of the young students and acknowledged the efforts put forth by them to prepare beautiful presentations. In her welcome address, she said that the aim of the symposium was to motivate and encourage students in the studies of Mathematics. Department of Mathematics is continuously organizing such activities and events to encourage and keep students motivated in Mathematics besides regular teaching in classrooms. She further elobatred on the work of Aryabhata and said that Aryabhata is a world famous Indian mathematician. He created a system of phonemic number notation in which numbers were represented by consonant-vowel monosyllables. His pure mathematics discusses topics such as determination of square and cube roots, geometrical figures with their properties and mensuration, arithmetric progression problems on the shadow of the gnomon, quadratic equations, linear and indeterminate equations. Aryabhata calculated the value of pi (π) to the fourth decimal digit and was likely aware that pi (π) is an irrational number, around 1300 years before Lambert proved the same. Sixteen students presented their presentations on the work contributions and life history of the Aryabhata. The jury members were Dr. Anupama Gupta and Dr. Kamaljeet Kour of Department of Mathematics and Dr. Amit Pal Kour from the Department of English. The proceedings’ of the symposium were coordinated by Ms. Nandi Kumari, a B.Sc student. The first three positions were secure by Manik Parihar, Bhanu Partap Singh and Arya Wali, respectively. Certificate of appreciation were presented to all the participating students.
