Maulana Azad Memorial College, Jammu, a constituent college of the Cluster University of Jammu, under the Patronage of Principal Prof. (Dr.) G. S. Rakwal celebrates International Mountain Day on 12-12-2022. On this occassion Department of Environmental Sciences in Collaboration with IQAC and the Eco Club of the college organized a lecture by Dr. Neeraj Sharma. Dr. Neeraj Sharma is the Head, and In-charge of the Institute of Mountain Environment, Bhaderwah Campus, University of Jammu. Dr. Neeraj Sharma acquainted the students regarding the importance of the mountains in our lives . He said that the conservation of mountains is a crucial factor for the sustainable development and is a part of Goal 15 of the SDGs of the United Nations. Due to climate change and overexploitation, mountains are under threat and their conservation is a crucial factor. International Mountain Day gives us an opportunity to spread awareness about protecting the mountain biodiversity, as these delicate ecosystems are under tremendous pressure from climate change, overexploitation and pollution. Prof. Neeraj Sharma, Coordinator IQAC of the college, in his address told that the global climate continues to warm, mountain people — some of the world’s poorest — face even greater struggles to survive. The rising temperatures also mean that mountain glaciers are melting at unprecedented rates, affecting freshwater supplies downstream for millions of people. This problem affects us all. He stressed and encouraged the students that we must reduce our carbon footprint and take care of these natural treasures.Speaking on the occasion, Principal of the the college, Prof. (Dr.) G.S Rakwal said that International Mountain Day is organized to spread awareness regarding the importance of mountains and the day aims to encourage sustainable development in mountains. The whole event was coordinated by Prof. Sudesh Kumar, Head of Department of Environmental Sciences . Other faculty members who were present in the lecture are Dr. Vishal Sharma, Dr. Nasir, Dr. Anil Singh, Prof. Esrul ul Ayub andDr Nitika Sharma. |
