Seminar on Mathematics in Daily Life, AI and Indian Heritage Held at MAM College
The Department of Mathematics, Maulana Azad Memorial (MAM) College, Jammu organized a seminar on the eve of National Mathematics Day with the objective of creating awareness and motivating students towards mathematics and its wide-ranging applications. At the outset, Dr. Shally Gupta, Head of the Department of Mathematics, formally welcomed the Chief Guest, Prof. Archana Kaul, Principal of the College, along with the invited speakers, faculty members, and students. In her welcome address, Dr. Shally Gupta highlighted the significance of National Mathematics Day, observed on 22 December in memory of the great Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan, and emphasized the enduring role of mathematics in intellectual development, scientific progress, and nation-building.
The seminar featured a series of insightful lectures covering both classical and modern dimensions of the subject. Dr. Shittal Sharma, in her lecture on Mathematics in Day-to-Day Life, emphasized the relevance of mathematics in everyday problem-solving, financial planning, and technological applications. Prof. Sonam Mehta delivered an informative talk on the History of Mathematics in India, highlighting India’s rich mathematical heritage and the contributions of ancient Indian scholars that shaped modern mathematical thought. Dr. Anil Singh, in his lecture on Mathematics in Artificial Intelligence, explained how mathematical tools such as linear algebra, probability, and optimization form the foundation of modern artificial intelligence and data-driven technologies. Dr. Kailash Sharma presented an engaging lecture on The Story of Fermat’s Last Theorem, narrating the centuries-long journey of the problem and its eventual proof, thereby showcasing the depth, creativity, and perseverance inherent in mathematical research.
More than 80 students from various streams including BCA, B.Sc., and M.Sc. Mathematics actively participated in the seminar. Faculty members from the Department of Statistics, including Dr. Ankush Bharti and Dr. Sandeep Charak, and from the Department of Computer Sciences, including Dr. Namita Singh, Ms. Rajni, and Ms. Garima Salgotra, also actively attended the programme. The technical sessions of the seminar were effectively chaired by Dr. Ankush Bharti and Dr. Namita Singh, which further enriched the academic deliberations.
The Principal of the College, Prof. Archana Kaul, appreciated the initiative of the Department of Mathematics and observed that such academic programmes play a vital role in fostering a deeper interest in mathematics as well as in understanding the rich legacy of Indian mathematics. She congratulated Dr. Shally Gupta and her team for the meticulous organization of the seminar and encouraged the department to organize similar programmes on a regular basis.
Mr. Kapil Sharma and Ms. Anu from the Department of Mathematics played a key role in the smooth organization of the programme. The formal vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Kailash Sharma, while the proceedings of the seminar were efficiently conducted by Dr. Shittal Sharma.
