P.G. Department of Mathematics, Govt. M.A.M College, Jammu in collaboration with IQAC celebrated National Mathematics Day on 22nd December 2021 and organized a lecture titled “Mathematics and its implications”. National Mathematics Day is celebrated on December 22 every year. The day marks the birth anniversary of famous mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. In 2012, then Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh declared the date as National Mathematics Day to honor the great man. The programme started with recitation of Saraswati Vandana. The event was held under the patronage of Principal, Prof. (Dr.) G. S. Rakwal. Dr Anupama Gupta, organizing secretary of the event formally welcomed the gathering and gave a detailed description by sharing a documentary of the great mathematician Dr. S. Ramanujan. The Principal of the college emphasized the importance of mathematics and believed that the subject expertise of Prof. Sunil Gupta, resource person, shall surely help the budding mathematicians. Dr Sunil Gupta, Controller of Exam, J&K Board of Professional Entrance Examination, who was the resource person of the event asserted on the applications of mathematics in day to day life by beautifully explaining the basic concepts of discounts, ratio, proportions, percentage etc. As mentioned in Ramanujan's biography 'The Man Who Knew Infinity' by Robert Knaigel, GH Hardy once went to visit Ramanujan at a hospital. Mr Hardy told him that he came in a taxi with the number '1729' which seemed to be an ordinary number. Ramanujan said that it was not. 1729, later termed the Hardy-Ramanujan Number, is the smallest number which can be expressed as the sum of two different cubes in two different ways, he said.. A formal vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Shally Gupta, HOD, Mathematics. A large number of students attended the event and interacted with resource person. All the faculty members of mathematics department attended the event. The programme concluded with recitation of National Anthem. |
