Webinar on Earthquake and Disaster Management in J&K
Department of Geology, Govt. MAM College under the aegis of
Prof. (Dr) G.S. Rakwal, Principal, Govt. MAM College and with the able guidance of Dr. Sanjay
Karlupia (HOD Geology, MAM College) organized a webinar on the topic, “Earthquake and
Disaster Management in J&K” in commemoration to Azadi ka Amrut Mahotsav. The event
started with Prof. Vimal presenting a formal welcome address to the invited speaker Dr. Waquar
Ahmed, Assistant Professor, University of Jammu; Dr. Sanjay Karlupia (HOD Geology, MAM
College) and the students attending the webinar.
Dr. Sanjay Karlupia presented a brief insight about the topic and its relevance. Dr. Waquar Ahmed
deliberated his lecture on Disaster management. He explained how disaster management
encompasses the classical management functions of planning, organizing, staffing, leading, and
controlling. He educated students how different organizations must work together to prevent,
mitigate, prepare for, respond to, and recover from the effects of disaster. He also gave a detailed
description of various types of disasters and disaster preparedness which must go beyond
emergency relief and life-saving actions, and should begin with mitigation and prevention that
include a combination of environmental, social, and economic aspects. Students participated very
enthusiastically and also raised many queries which were addressed by Dr. Waquar Ahmed.
The program ended with formal vote of thanks by Prof. Vimal. He thanked the speaker
for sparing his valuable time. He also appreciated the students for their participation and motivated
them to take part in such events in future as well.
